Non-destructive testing (NDT) is the process of inspecting, testing, or evaluating materials for any deficiency in quality , uniformity or non -compliance to the required parameter , with nil or negligible damage to the element to be tested.
Whereas other tests are normally destructive in nature and are done on a specified number of samples , rather than on the site element that has actually been put into service.
During construction, NDT is used to ensure the quality of materials and execution processes or fabrication and erection phases, and in-service NDT inspections are used to ensure that final products has the required integrity.
